We’ve seen examples of social media platforms wanting to be hubs for games. That’s apparently what TikTok is doing now, as there’s an upcoming Games tab for the platform. This will give users access to exclusive mobile games that they can play directly within the app.
If that sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Snapchat did something like this in 2019. However, it didn’t go so well. Even Facebook took to it some time ago.
A Games tab is coming to TikTok
TikTok is a lot of things (good and bad), but it’s never been a platform where you can sit and play games. This may be the barrier to entry for this feature.
According to the Financial Times (via Mashable), TikTok is preparing to have a tab specifically for exclusive mobile games on the platform. We expect this tab to be full of games developed exclusively for TikTok by third-party developers.
At this time, we don’t know what types of games will be available or how many. However, we know you might be able to pay for the content. So you might be able to purchase additional games or perform in-game microtransactions. Along with this, there will also be advertisements.
When will the TikTok games tab launch? We’re not 100% sure, but the source claims that TikTok will hold its first global gaming event on November 2. So, November 2 could be the launch date of this tab or the official announcement. It’s not too long to wait, so TikTok fans should mark their calendars.
Other companies are turning to mobile games
Diving into mobile games makes sense for many reasons. The mobile games market is one of the most dynamic markets in the world. Mobile games made more money than console games and PC games combined last year.
That’s why companies like Snapchat, Twitter, and even Netflix wanted a slice of that pie. Netflix is going all out on its mobile gaming initiative with rumors pointing to cloud gaming at some point in the future. If TikTok can make a splash with this move, it could be huge for the company.
