Online gaming platform Roblox backs Apple in antitrust case

online gaming platform Roblox Corp. said Thursday Apple Inc’s App Store offers privacy and security benefits to its users, supporting the iPhone maker’s bid to beat a call by epic games in a key antitrust case in the United States.

Epic, known for its “fortnitelargely lost a lawsuit last year over whether Apple’s fees and payment rules for app makers were anti-competitive. He appealed to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals .

“The review and approval process for apps available on Apple’s App Store improves safety and security and gives those apps greater legitimacy in the eyes of users,” Roblox said Thursday in a legal filing.

Roblox had a prominent role in the original lawsuit last year. The Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating key findings from the antitrust lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games, in which the ‘Fortnite’ maker argued that Apple gave a free pass to Roblox, whose app allows people to choose from a selection of games to play.

A senior Apple executive described Roblox’s offering as “experiments”. Soon after, Roblox changed the descriptions on its website to “experiments” from “games” and called itself a metaverse company.

Apple said its rules promote several benefits for consumers, including increased security and privacy. Two former Central Intelligence Agency directors and 21 other former US national security officials made that argument in Apple’s endorsement on Thursday.

The appeal hearing is scheduled for next year.
