Stadia refunds start today: Is Google paying for cloud gaming failure?

Google has begun the refund process for its Stadia service, which will officially cease operations early next year. The search giant had recently indicated that it was retiring the cloud-hosted game streaming service. Google will begin issuing refunds for all games and other content purchased through Stadia, but the process may take time and there are certain conditions. Let’s take a look at the eligibility criteria for getting a refund for the fundamental game streaming platform.

Google to begin refund process for Stadia subscribers

Google Stadia will officially shut down on January 18, 2023. However, Google has confirmed that it has begun the process of refunding first users and subscribers of the cloud gaming service. The company will begin automatically refunding buyers for all purchases such as “games, add-on content, and subscription fees” attached to the Stadia service.

As part of the refund process, Google will even refund the price players paid for acquiring Stadia hardware. This includes Stadia Controllers. It is important to note, however, that hardware purchased through the Google Store will be eligible for a refund. Hardware acquired from a physical store will not be eligible.

Simply put, players who purchased hardware from retail chains or physical stores to use with the Stadia service will not receive any refunds. By the way, Google has indicated that Stadia Pro subscriptions will not be refunded either.

Google will issue refunds to the payment method used to complete the original transaction on Stadia. Therefore, players should ensure that their debit or credit cards and bank accounts synced with these gateways are functional.

If Google is unable to issue a refund, the company will notify the Stadia customer via an email linked to the Google account that was used to access the Stadia services. The email will contain instructions for setting up an alternate refund acceptance method.

Google promises to process refunds by the end of January 2023

Google said it was trying to get refunds as quickly as possible and added that “the majority of refunds will be processed by January 18, 2023”. This means that Stadia customers may have to wait a few weeks for their refund. Google has offered detailed FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) to answer common questions and doubts.

It is indeed worrying to see Google closing Stadia, a service considered revolutionary three years ago. Stadia was indeed a fundamental game streaming platform. It’s surprising to see the demise of a service backed by Google’s resources and funding. Services like NVIDIA GeForce Now and Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming platforms are gaining subscribers, however.

Google previously reported that Stadia failed to gain traction. However, the company continued to deny rumors of the service’s untimely demise. Phil Harrison, vice president and general manager of Stadia, has finally acknowledged that Google will shut down Stadia in January 2023.
